Renault F1 Racing Team – Brand graphics design evolution.
Brand design styles and photoshop illustrations. (2001-2009 Racing Seasons).
New brand design styles.
Design and Photoshop retouching, illustrations, for RF1 brand evolution 2009 racing season. Working with the Renault Formula 1 Design Centre, at Enstone, Oxfordshire and Studio 6 Communications, Bristol, UK.
Above and below: RF1 starting grid graphics, a cool way to juxtapose the Renault F1 Car and its bright but garish branding, against the contrasting track graphics and architecture of the circuits, especially with Monaco. Also screen grabs graphics as they appeared on the RF1 global website. Always a tight deadline to get these images completed immediately post race and then updated to the website 24 hours later.
The brand evolution theme being the RF1 race car illustrations taking ‘ownership and branding’ with supporting F1 speed lines influencing the locations and tracks. So full colour and monochrome, styled illustrations‘, were the order of the day with some of these images were used up to 20ft+ across as Renault brand banners, but used mainly for the website, internal comms, lots of print and presentations, etc.
The original racing season background images were sent over ‘post race’ to keep things current for the up coming race seasons brand style for print and web. Then the new season Race car body shells and parts (usually in top secret engineering development in the UK, France and Spain), were shot separately in a dedicated car studio, (minus the engines usually). Expertly photographed by Bath based Photographer, Phil Davies who did an amazing job matching lighting and angles to the original images. But creating these often caused major headaches for myself and Steve Sackett, Creative director of Studio 6 when doing the art direction. Always great care was taking to match the lighting and angles to the original image. The final imagery of the new race car for that season was then retouched on top of the original images. Adding in all new sponsors logos, helmets, gloves, tyres, bits of flying gravel, etc. Often all of this changing on a daily basis due to RF1 updating car and brand developments at time of design, causing me rather a lot of last minute deadline havoc! Great to design though.
I burnt the midnight oil many times with Studio 6 and this Client, but always great work to design, although always a tight deadline. Which meant a lot of last minute changes with the result of often working through the night becoming very red eyed in the morning! I ended up seeing the somewhat garish Renault/Lucky Seven blue and yellow F1 Cars everywhere. No regrets mind you, fantastic clients to work with,…Va-va-voooom!
