Black Nore Consultancy – Logotype and illustrations.

Icon and Logotype branding – 2017.

A recent project earlier this spring to design new branding for Black Nore Consultancy. A new business venture for a client who was recently retired from the Royal Navy. He needed a new brand for his defence and maritime consultancy business within the UK and further overseas.

Above: The original CS illustrator illustration of Black Nore Lighthouse Icon, based on my photography of the actual lighthouse later used on the finished logotypes, (see below).

The original idea for the logo icon came from utilising Black Nore Lighthouse. Which is an existing lighthouse (now disused but fully preserved), on the North Somerset coastline at Portishead, overlooking the Bristol Channel.

We both grew up in Portishead, so knew this famous local landmark very well, it being on the coast path just outside of the Town. So on a research trip to visit it in May 2017 it was great to see how its now in a fantastic preserved state and looked after very well by a local volunteer historical society.

I used my graphic illustration style originally as an icon graphical device (CS illustrator) for the Lighthouse, using the white background of the image to form the lighthouse beam nicely as well. This was then further developed into the full logotype and applied across the usual media of; Letter heading, Invoice Sheet, Compliment Slips, Business Card and supporting Word and Powerpoint templates for internal proposal and presentation documents.

Typographic wise a more traditional and classic feel for the Font was the feeling from the Client; Sabon, Trajan Pro and even good old Georgia were options and considered. But it was the more classical sounding and looking Plantagenet Cherokee that made the final cut and used throughout, Upper Case as well for more emphasis for a new brand.

A great design to originate and a real pleasure doing so and an obvious design choice really. As soon as a I walked down the coast path to the original Lighthouse, you could see how it would look. Good use was made with the idea of the light beam as a supporting graphic too. So hopefully it has done the Clients naval and maritime background some justice by shining a light on his future related career.

Above: The original inspiration at Black Nore Lighthouse a classic example of Victorian maritime architecture, well built by Trinity House functional but still attractive. The logotype was applied across the usual media A4 Letter-heading, continuation sheers, Invoice sheet, Comp slips, Business cards, etc.

Below: Plenty of thinking time and ideas with the scamp/sketch sheets, very inspiring location the North Somerset Coast Path, historic for me as well Ive spent a lot of my youth along this stretch of coast!
