The overall idea being that season’s gfaphics on and surrounding the RF1 car would take ‘ownership and branding’ with supporting F1 speed lines influencing the locations and tracks. So it featured a flat graphic full colour and monochrome styled illustrations, for RF1 print and website/media use. Utilising individual racing circuits (i.e. Monaco/Spain), picked out for they’re inherent iconic look and feel that suited the more flat graphic style, using Renault F1 brand colours, garish in colour but an enforced palette!

Some of these images were used up to 20ft across within Renault locations across Europe. Also had to work of course for the web, print and presentations, etc. The original background Racing season images were sent over ‘post race’ to keep things current for print and web, (for that years racing season). Then all the F1 Car body shells were photgraphed separately, in a dedicated car studio, as these would be brand new car designs for each racing season, (minus the engines usually), causing headaches for Steve Sackett, Creative director of Studio 6 and myself. Bath based Photographer, Phil Davies did an amazing  job matching lighting and angles to the original image, leaving the final designed image all retouched on top of original imagery. Adding in all new sponsors logos, helmets, gloves, tyres, etc.
All of this changing on a daily basis due to RF1 new car and brand developments at the time of design causing total havoc sometimes! I burnt the midnight oil so many times with this Client, always a tight deadline, which meant a lot of last minute changes with the result of often working through the night becoming very red eyed in the morning! I ended up seeing the somewhat garish Renault/Lucky Seven brand of blue and yellow F1 Cars everywhere. No regrets mind you, fantastic clients to work with,…Va-va-voooom!

Above: RF1 2006 – Starting grid graphics, a cool way to juxtapose the Renault F1 Car and its bright but garish branding, against the contrasting track graphics and architecture of the circuits. Also screen grabs graphics as they appeared on the RF1 global website, website. Always a tight deadline to get these images completed immediately post race and then updated to the website 24-48hours later.
